EXPLORE ANCIENT ROME WONDERS

Your Rome tour will begin with a stop in Colosseum Square  surrounded by vestiges of Ancient Rome and dominated by the imposing ancient Roman amphitheater: the Colosseum. 

This icon of Rome was built between 78-80 AD by Emperors Vespasian and Titus.  Recognized as the largest amphitheater built at that time, it accommodated more than 50,000 spectators around its oval arena which hosted gladiatorial fights, animal hunts, reenactments of famous battles, mock sea battles, theatrical dramas, and more. 

As you view the Colosseum from the outside as you stroll through Colosseum Square, be sure to walk around it as this massive structure appears differently from various angles.  The Colosseum is quite picturesque! Also near the Colosseum is the towering Arch of Constantine. This 4th century AD triumphal arch was built to commemorate the victorious Emperor Constantine in the famous Battle of Milvian Bridge against Emperor Maxentius. 

A short drive away is Circus Maximus, once a large stadium for chariot races that were quite famous in ancient Rome. Although just the outline remains, one can imagine this once largest stadium of Ancient Rome with up to 150,000 cheering spectators enjoying chariot races and other sports events.  In the background is the impressive Palatine Hill that still boasts remains of massive opulent villas and structures overlooking Circus Maximus built by Roman emperors and the elite who resided there.

From a secret terrace on top of Capitoline Hill you will enjoy a picturesque sweeping view of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and the Colosseum in the distance.  The Roman Forum was the hub of ancient Rome and served as its political, legal, financial, and religious nucleus. 

Not to be missed on any Rome tour is the Pantheon. Built in 1st century AD as a pagan temple dedicated to all gods, the rotund Pantheon was later converted into a Christian Church in the 7th century, dedicated to Saint Mary and the Martyrs.

Inside the Pantheon are tombs of Italy’s most famous kings and Renaissance artists like Raphael.  Be sure to look up and see the oculus in the center of the large coffered dome. This oculus completely open to the elements is the only source of light inside the monuments. When it rains, drainage system beneath the floor carries the fallen rainwater away.
 

Almost 2,000 years after it was built, the Pantheon remains one of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings and in continuous use. Its large coffered dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.

VISIT ROME’S MOST FAMOUS SQUARES

A highlight of many Rome tours is visiting Rome’s most famous fountains: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Piazza Navona.

The Trevi Fountain beckons visitors with its recognizable melody of water gushing from various stone sculptures into its large pool of water. Be sure to follow the decades long tradition and toss a coin into the fountain to ensure a future return to the Eternal City!

The Spanish Steps welcomes you with its elegant winding stairway that connects the upper French Church of Trinita dei Monti to the square below that boasts the Baroque fountain “Fontana della Barcaccio” - The Fountain of the Old Boat. This unusual masterpiece is credited to Pietro Bernini, the father of world famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
 

The lively Piazza Navona is a delightful display of fountains, colorful art displayed by local artists, and a variety of warm colored palazzi that encircle the unusually shaped square. 

Piazza Navona outlines the oblong structure upon which it was built that was once an ancient 1st century AD Roman Stadium upon which it stands. Built by Emperor Domitian, this ancient large stadium was used for athletic competitions. The square’s current name Navona evolved from the ancient word for “games”, ‘agones’.

The square’s most famous centerpiece is the elaborate 17th century Fountain of Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.  This complex masterpiece of stone and water represents the four major rivers of the major continents known in that era: Danube (Europe), Nile (Africa), Rio de la Plata (America) and Ganges (Asia).  An ancient Egyptian obelisk erected by Pope Innocent X tops the fountain.

MEETING POINTS TO MEET YOUR DRIVER

For Day Tours from Rome Hotels, your driver will meet you inside the lobby of your hotel or area permitted by your hotel.

For Apartments or B&B’s without a lobby, your driver will meet you outside the main entrance of your Address.

If your driver will park the vehicle as close as lawfully possible, and meet you on foot at your Address to accompany you to your parked vehicle.

 
*  For Shore Excursions from Civitavecchia

For Shore Excursions from Civitavecchia, your driver will meet you on the Pier next to your Ship at your tour's scheduled pick-up time holding a sign with the NAME in your reservation.

Do NOT leave the ship area, and do NOT take a shuttle bus outside the port. 

Look for your driver in the same area on the Pier as ALL private drivers will be waiting for their clients.  After you meet your driver you will be accompanied to your vehicle and your Rome private shore excursion will begin with a leisurely drive from Civitavecchia to Rome. 

VISITS INSIDE THE COLOSSEUM are Optional upon request

This Rome in A Day with Vatican Guide tour does NOT include a visit inside the Colosseum.

You have the opportunity to view the Colosseum from the outside as you enjoy a stroll through Colosseum Square in the heart of Ancient Rome. 

If you wish to visit inside the Colosseum, you would be required to purchase your own Colosseum Tickets online.  Please let us know this preference so we include it in your reservation and provide you with LINKS and Instructions to purchase your Colosseum Tickets online.

Visiting inside the Colosseum will also take time away from other sites suggested in the tour, and you may have to skip some sites like Piazza Navona.  

* IMPORTANT COLOSSEUM VISIT INFORMATION 

• Colosseum Tickets require a specific Time Slot to be pre-booked online for visits
• Colosseum Tickets with the most suitable time slots tend to SELL OUT fast, even months in advance.
• ALL visitors are required to clear security checkpoints prior to entering the monument. This may result in possibly LONG SECURITY LINES with unpredictably LONG WAIT TIMES.
• For safety and security, Colosseum allows a maximum of 3,000 visitors inside the monument at a time.  Unfortunately on occasions, even Time Slot Ticket Holders were required to wait longer than anticipated when the Colosseum reached maximum visitor capacity
• Do not bring large bags or backpacks inside the Colosseum as they are not permitted.
• It is advisable to bring with you a bottle of water, sunscreen, and a hat in the summer as it can be very hot and sunny inside the Colosseum.
